HSA/FSA guidance
Can HSA or FSA funds help pay for online personal training?
General fitness expenses do not qualify merely because they benefit your health. Eligibility is limited to narrower medical circumstances, and reimbursement is never automatic or guaranteed.
What eligibility can depend on
The account alone does not make coaching eligible.
IRS guidance says an expense for general health does not qualify. A narrower expense may qualify when it treats a specific disease diagnosed by a physician; your administrator may require a Letter of Medical Necessity or other supporting paperwork.
Answers Not Excuses cannot determine eligibility, approve a claim, or guarantee reimbursement. Those decisions belong to your plan administrator.
A safer way to proceed
Four checks before you count on HSA or FSA funds.
Start with your plan administrator
Ask whether your specific expense is eligible under your HSA or FSA rules and the IRS medical-expense standard. Get the answer before relying on reimbursement.
Ask what medical documentation is required
Some plans may require a Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed healthcare provider. Your plan can tell you whether one is needed and what it must include.
Confirm the receipt requirements
Ask what details must appear on an itemized receipt, then keep the receipt and any supporting documents with your records.
Follow your plan’s submission process
Submit only after you understand the rules and deadlines. Eligibility and reimbursement decisions remain with your HSA or FSA administrator.

Requirements differ, so use this as a conversation checklist—not a promise that a claim will be accepted.
- Written confirmation from your planSave any eligibility guidance or submission instructions the administrator provides.
- A Letter of Medical Necessity, if requiredThis may need to come from a licensed healthcare provider and relate the service to a documented medical need.
- An itemized receiptConfirm which service, date, provider, and payment details your plan requires on the receipt.
- Your submitted claim recordsKeep copies of the claim and supporting documents in case the administrator requests clarification.
